Acupuncture Marianne Volpe, MAOM, L.Ac., extension 2 Acupuncture is a system of healthcare used by over 1 billion people per year. This oldest continuous used form of medicine has been practiced in China and other eastern countries for over 3,000 years. The goal of acupuncture is to help restore the body to balance and while helping the body's systems work better. In China most internal conditions are treated with acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM). The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) recognize the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating many diseases including and beyond; migraine headaches, arthritis, pain, depression and anxiety, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), sciatica, digestive disorders, childhood illnesses, PMS, and asthma. The
unique power behind this type of medicine comes from its ability to treat an
individual person and not a disease or a symptom. The treatment is based on
resolving the underlying cause of the problem (the “root”), which not only rids
the body of its symptoms (the “branches”) and also prevents those symptoms from
returning. Treatments are specific to each individual, and address each person’s
specific disharmony. The benefits of acupuncture often go beyond relief of a particular condition. Many patients also experience an increase in energy and well being, and improved sleep. Acupuncture is safe and has been tested for over 3,000 years.
