What is Massage Therapy?
Massage is one of the oldest healing arts. This art is
accepted as part of many rehabilitation programs. Massage
therapy has also proven beneficial for many chronic
conditions. Receiving massage as part of regular schedule
self-care can play a huge part in improving your health and
the quality of the aging process. Massage therapy is a
necessary piece in health and wellness plan.
Benefits
The benefits of a massage are varied and far-reaching.
Massage mitigates back pain, arthritis, mental and physical
fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes and depression.
Massage can also increase joint flexibility, promotes faster
healing of injured muscular tissue, promotes better sleep
and improves concentration. Overall massage helps to relieve
the everyday stress and tension that can lead to disease and
illness.
Swedish
Swedish massage is the baseline massage. Your session may
begin with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your
nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your
body becomes relaxed, pressure may be added gradually to
relieve areas of muscle tension. The treatment will take
place in a warm, comfortable and quiet room. Soft music will
be played and candles lit to help you relax. You will lie on
a table especially designed for your comfort. At all times
you will be properly draped keeping you warm and
comfortable. Only the body area being worked on will be
exposed. Lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged
comfortably while hydrating your skin.
Therapeutic (deep tissue)
This treatment aims at the deep tissue structure of the
muscle and fascia tissue, Deep tissue massage uses many of
the same movements and techniques as the Swedish massage
with generally deeper pressure. Deep tissue is also a more
focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release
chronic muscle tension or knots in specific areas.
Communication is kept open to make sure that the appropriate
amount of pressure is used.
Reflexology
Reflexology is the application of pressure, stretch and
movement to the feet and hands. Pressure applied to the
feet/hands generates a signal through the nervous system.
Reflexology is viewed as a mirror image of the body. By
applying specific techniques the therapist can break up
patterns of the stress in other parts of the body relating
to that area of the foot or hand. Benefits include reduced
stress. The feet and hands help set the tension level for
the rest of our body. They are an easy way to interrupt
these stress signals and create change in the body.
Reflexology is a clothed session with only the removal of
shoes and socks.
Pregnancy Massage
Massage during pregnancy is safe and very beneficial. The
table will be set up so that you will lie in a semi reclined
position with wedged pillows to ensure your comfort. A
massage can help reduce stress and relief muscle cramps in
the lower back, neck, hips, and legs. Massage will also
increase blood in your lymph circulation, which can reduce
swelling and improve overall health. Getting a massage is
also a great way to provide support for a new mom with
physical and emotional strain.
